Easy country kitchen potpourri recipes for gifts
Country Kitchen Potpourri This potpourri has a warm "welcome home" aroma that's pleasant any time of year. 1 tablespoon aniseed 1 tablespoon allspice 6 nutmegs 6 cinnamon sticks, coarsely broken 1 teaspoon powdered ginger ¼ cup whole cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1-2 vanilla beans, cut into 1" pieces 1 cup coarse salt such as kosher salt Crush aniseed and allspice in a mortar and pestle. Use a hammer to crack the nutmeg and cinnamon sticks. Mix all of the ingredients together and fill a lidded container of your choice. Old Mason jars work well. Open whenever you want to freshen the air. Country Kitchen Simmering or Jar Potpourri 3 cups spina cristi 2 cups yarrow flower - whole (2" sprigs) 1 1/2 cups cinnamon chips - large cut 1 1/2 cups lemon grass - (mexican) 1 1/2 cups orange peel - large cut 1 cup allspice - (mexican) whole 1 cup anise - (star) standard 1 cup ginger root slices 1 cup juniper berries - (blue) whole 1 cup marigold flowers - whole 1 cup sunflower petals 1 cup velvet flowers - (burnt orange) 1/2 cup calamus root 1/2 cup cloves - whole 1/2 cup coriander - whole 1/2 cup rosemary - whole 1/2 cup uva ursi -(pinguica leaves) essential oils: lemon with cinnamon, orange and clove or try vanilla with cinnamon Simmering jar potpourri fills the home with fragrant delights. Mix ingredients and add oils the same as for jar potpourri. Cure a minimum of 2 weeks. For stove top, add 2 to 3 tablespoons potpourri to boiling water in 2 quart stainless steel saucepan, reduce heat and simmer uncovered on stove top. For simmer-pot add 1 tablespoon to hot water. Country kitchen Potpourri can simmer for hours, but be sure to check water levels and add warm tap water as needed. Discard mixture after use.
