The Sloppy Joe - a classic recipe that has withstood the test of time. Simple sandwiches that eat like a meal are always a family favorite. Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix 1 cup dried minced onion 3 tablespoons green pepper flakes 4 teaspoons salt 3 tablespoons cornstarch 4 teaspoons instant minced garlic 2 teaspoons each dry mustard 2 teaspoons celery seed 2 teaspoons chili powder Combine all ingredients in a small bowl until evenly distributed. Spoon mixture onto a 6-inch square of aluminum foil and fold to make airtight. Label with date and contents. Store in a cool, dry place. Use within 6 months. Yield: About 1 package or 3 Tbsp of mix. To make: Brown 1 pound lean ground beef in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease. Add 1 package (or 3 Tbsp) Sloppy Joe seasoning mix, 1/2 cup water, one 8-ounce can of tomato sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over toasted hamburger buns or onion rolls. Makes 6 servings. Did You Know? Sloppy Joe's are simpler version of a barbeque sandwich which uses shredded beef or pork and barbecue sauce. One that is made made from ground turkey instead of ground beef is also known as a sloppy tom. The term "sloppy" comes from the fact that eating it as if it were a normal sandwich often results in the meat and sauce spilling out. It may also be served "open face". A sloppy Joe served with no bun at all is known as a saucy beefeater.
